Rain returns tomorrow: Southern MS / AL / LA Weather Forecast – 10/19/21

Things are looking decent again today with highs around 80 and light winds from the east. The clouds will start to increase tonight and rain will sneak back into the forecast for Wednesday and Thursday. A few showers may even linger into Friday, though, that is looking less likely at this point.

The culprit? Physics.

As the ridge of high pressure we’ve been enjoying moves easy, we will be on the “backside” of the ridge. That means a southerly flow will pick back up and a southerly flow off the Gulf of Mexico often means a chance for (at least a few) afternoon storms.

That cold front to the north isn’t moving toward the Gulf Coast. Instead , it is lifting to the east and shoveling in cooler air to areas to the north as the ridge of high pressure flattens out.

The next cold front through the MSALLA will be showing up next week – on what looks like Wednesday or Thursday.

This next system may be the start of the regions Fall Severe Weather Season. As of now, it doesn’t look like any kind of severe weather outbreak, by any means. But it may feature some rambunctious storms with heavy rain, gusty wind, lightning and small hail. And, of course, because it is Mississippi, we can’t rule out the potential for tornadoes.

But that is next week. This week’s rain is more ‘summertime’ type storms as we get a southerly kick off the Gulf. So for Wednesday and Thursday or this week, the severe threat is very, very low.
