Another dry stretch this week, some precip possible this weekend (probably not snow): Southern MS/AL/LA Weather Forecast – 2/7/22

It is looking like another dry, clam stretch of weather for the region during the next few days. We may see some precip today, closer to the coast, but otherwise, no major weather problems.

Okay, so it is a bit chilly… But it is winter!

Things will slowly moderate as we move through the week before the next system tries to push through this weekend. This next one won’t have much precip with it, but it will flip the wind back to the north.

Be warned, you’ll probably see weather model maps with snow or ice on them. Don’t get too worried about that (or excited, either) as this type of weather pattern always plays tricks on the model guidance.

Here is a good example for Saturday evening. The ECMWF, generally a good model, is showing snow for parts of Mississippi where it is about 39F to 42F.

‘But Nick, I’ve seen it snow at 45F! So it could happen!’

Totally. It can snow with temperatures in the 40s. But it takes some very special circumstances for that to happen. And there is a big, and very important, difference between seeing an event occur once and predicting that same event to occur again. Especially when it is an ‘extreme’ event like snowing with temperatures in the 40s.

To be blunt, the models just aren’t good enough to accurately predict such an event. They can, though, inaccurately predict such an event. And that is what you see above.

Instead, the most likely event is some passing drizzle and light rain. And that is what the forecast is currently calling for.
