Storms gone, now the heat builds into the area: Southern MS/AL/LA Weather Forecast – 5/6/22

After the handful of showers and storms moved through last night, it left much of the area cooler this morning. The cold pool on the back side of the rain dropped temperatures into the mid 60s for some folks

Enjoy it. Soak it up. And take advantage of the cooler conditions this morning. And for the next few mornings, too. Because it will be pretty warm in the afternoons.

High pressure will be taking over in the Gulf of Mexico. At the surface, this means a return flow from the south. This will push some heat and humidity into the region, but not a ton. Because there will also be an area of lower pressure off the east coast that will leave parts of Alabama and Georgia with a northerly flow.

This means that while we may be humid at the surface, we may also get enough vertical mixing to help dilute some of that extra moisture with the drier air aloft.

Once we move into the middle to end of next week, things look to get rather toasty. Afternoon highs pushing the mid 90s. And, at this time, I don’t think I could rule out a few 97s and 98s sneaking into some folks backyards.

If we get to 96F or warmer “officially” at the Hattiesburg and Meridian sites it would set Top 10 All-time records for the hottest days in May,

By next weekend things should start to cool down a bit as we get back into a more typical May pattern.
