We do have a few showers and storms in parts of the area this evening, but most of those are simply “warm sector” showers and storms riding along mid-level instability. None of these are truly surface-based yet. That limits the threat for sever weather right now.
The general timeline is mostly unchanged. It looks like this:

This timeline and the potential threat may change slightly during the next 12 hours, depending on how a few things with the forecast shake out but should generally hold. This will also depend on your location, so please keep tabs on the weather.

MOST PLACES — Storms, brief heavy rain, lightning, and wind gusts up to 45mph

SOME PEOPLE — Storms, heavy rain, brief localized flooding, lightning, wind gusts up to 55mph, up to quarter-sized hail
A FEW PLACES — Heavy rain, localized flooding, wind gusts exceeding 65mph, up to ping-pong ball hail, a brief tornado
CAVEATS
A quick note about the forecast and where it may fail. Yes, fail. This forecast, like every forecast, is not set in stone. There are always interesting little quirks that occur that we can’t see and that can shift things and make the weather turn out differently than expected.

POSSIBILITY 1: ROUND ONE PUSHES FARTHER EAST
Model guidance takes the current round of storms, Round One, and pushes it into western Mississippi and then shows it losing strength and falling apart. These storms will be strong to severe at times until the die out. We may even see a few tornadoes.
Then, the cold pool on the backside of Round One also dissipates and falls apart according to the model guidance.
But the model guidance may be a bit too aggressive on the death of line of storms and the cold pool of air behind it. In fact, I would bet on it. How much? That’s the unknown.
The tough thing is that rain cooled air can be pretty dense and tough to move. On the flip side, though, it will still be warmer and more buoyant than the air behind the cold front that is set to rip across the area behind it. So it is a bit of a toss up. Where it will matter, though, regardless is across western Mississippi where I think it will really limit the severe weather threat. Most of the area that will get Round One and be left out of Round Two are not in our forecast area – but places like Vicksburg, MS, Natchez, MS or even Winnfield, LA are likely to get Round One… and that’s it.
But if that cold pool pushes farther east, it would limit the potential shot for Round Two in places like Brookhaven, Hazlehurst, and Jackson, MS.
The chance is low, but certainly not zero.
POSSIBILITY 2: WARMER AIR DOESN’T GET AS FAR NORTH
Model guidance is set on a big push of warm Gulf of Mexico air surging as far north as nearly I-20 by tomorrow afternoon. This is, in part, due to the developing area of low-level low pressure in the region as well as the clearing skies south of the warm front that allows temperatures to bounce into the mid to upper 70s across coastal Mississippi and Louisiana.
Warmer air means higher dewpoints. Higher dewpoints means lower LCLs (cloud base). Lower LCLs means tornado formation is that much easier (esp in winter).
So if that surge isn’t as robust, is slower, or is held farther south, it will limit the severe weather threat north of wherever that line of warmer air is.
How warm is warm? Well up at 500mb (20,000ft) we are at -10C which is about as warm as you can get and still make significant severe weather in the area in December. At 850mb (4,000ft) we are about 13C which is right about where we should be to get severe weather. So it is a thin line to walk.
I would say, check your thermometer tomorrow. If you aren’t above 66F you are probably going to find it hard to get severe weather based on how the atmosphere is stacked tomorrow. Not impossible, but tough.
And if you aren’t above 69F tomorrow, I think it will be difficult for you to see a tornado. Again, not impossible. But certainly difficult.
I tend to think this isn’t as likely as the above-mentioned scenario, but is a possibility.
POSSIBILITY 3: BOTH OF THOSE THINGS HAPPEN
If the cold pool sinks farther east and southeast and the warm air can’t get as far inland it will really limit the threat for severe weather across Louisiana and Mississippi. Round One may pack slightly more punch but Round Two would be far less significant.
If this happened, most spots would likely see a lot of strong storms, rotating and dropping small hail and producing lightning and gusty wind… but that would be about it.
What are the chances that both of these things occur? Pretty low. But not zero. So if you are someone who wants to hope for something to happen to make the storms not as bad, this is what you want.
POSSIBILITY 4: BOTH OF THOSE THINGS DON’T HAPPEN AND INSTEAD WE GET LESS COLD AND MORE WARMTH
You don’t have to be a meteorologist, I would guess, to know what that may mean. It would mean an increase in the potential for severe weather across the area.
Nick’s Take
Given the above caveats I have a hard time being concerned about widespread severe weather for everyone. I think that where we will see severe weather will be in the places where things line up perfectly.
I’ve found that when the computer model data says “slam dunk” but is based on a few particular things occurring (warm air and cold pool, for example) within a particular timescale (before the cold front, but after the warm front) hat I should be skeptical because the computer models tend to struggle to accurately predict both of those things simultaneously. The models’ can sometimes get one right, and other times get the other right… but both? At once? I’m skeptical.
But! And this is important! While the “floor” is low (limited severe weather threat given above caveats keeps significant severe weather closer to the coast and later in the day) the ceiling (potential for up to EF4 tornadoes if the above-mentioned caveats do not happen and things shake out like the models suggest) is very high.
So we have to really pay close attention to the forecast and plan and prepare like it will be a bad day because it could be a very bad day. And we have to be comfortable with the potential that it isn’t a bad day and we made plans and prepared for “nothing” to happen.
I know that everyone wants to know, “Will I get a tornado at my house or not? And hen will it be here?” but that those aren’t knowable things. Math and Science are a great help to figure out that it is even a possibility. But they can’t give specifics like that.
