Hit and miss storms continue this week, some severe storms possible: Southern MS/AL/LA Weather Forecast – 5/8/23

This morning, the showers and storms should be pretty benign, albeit noisy at times. Lightning and thunder are about as bad as the weather will get.

Looking at the forecast for the next few days, I asked ChatGPT to give the forecast a shot. I put in a bunch of info and tried to see what it could produce and the results were pretty surprising.

We may see additional popup showers and thunderstorms that may develop today, with the morning showers possibly keeping the area somewhat stabilized. However, we still expect strong updrafts over parts of the area this afternoon, with a possibility of some strong downdrafts with storms that develop on the northern edges of the deeper moisture.

Although the confidence for any widespread severe weather is low, we could see some isolated strong to severe storms develop, with the primary hazard being damaging wind gusts. Some hail cannot be ruled out. Late tonight, there is a slight chance for showers and storms to dip into far northern parts of the forecast area.

Moving on to Tuesday through next Monday, we can expect above-normal temperatures along with higher rain chances. Model guidance shows slight disagreement regarding the timing of the convection, with the ECMWF showing slightly higher precip amounts particularly across the southern half of the area by early Tuesday morning.

Not bad, and actually pretty accurate. It helps that one of the major inputs was the forecast discussion from the Jackson National Weather Service, though. Those guys and girls know weather!

In all, though, the current weather pattern will likely persist through the week. This is pretty typical May weather for our area, honestly. Maybe a bit more rainy than normal, but seeing these afternoon storms and little overnight clusters move through isn’t out of the ordinary.
