It is continuing to be a busy week for severe weather for our local area as this stationary front brings further thunderstorms and the possibility of hail and wind gusts this weekend. This Summer heat is also looking to stick around for this weekend as the temperatures continue to hover around 90 degrees.
Slight Risk Across Arkansas, Mississippi, and Southern Alabama
The SPC has issued a Slight Risk of severe weather for most of Arkansas, Mississippi, and Southern Alabama for today. With this Slight Risk comes the chance of producing quarter-inch hail and strong gusts up to around 70 mph. We will see some early morning thunderstorms sweep through and move out West past Eastern Mississippi around 8am with scattered thunderstorms expected the rest of the day. Some of these storms will be pretty intense and begin raining heavy in what seems like out of nowhere, so always be careful if you plan on traveling today.
We are monitoring the possibility of more severe weather on Saturday as well with some models such as the NAM 3km Mesoscale Model showing possibility of organized thunderstorms moving South across Mississippi as a shortwave trough could possibly excite some afternoon thunderstorms through the area tomorrow afternoon.
There is still strong moisture flow from the Gulf that will be supplying much of the rain this weekend as upper-level winds are veering winds will bring significant instability to the area. This creates a strong CAPE value all across Mississippi that will increase the threat of severe weather.
This intense heat will also continue to dominate the area with temperatures expected to remain in the high 80s to low 90s across the weekend. Especially as you move south towards the Gulf Coast, temperatures will reach as high as 93 on Saturday while Central Mississippi will be feeling slightly cooler. This trend is also expected to continue into next week.
The region will continue to be under a Slight Risk for severe weather by Sunday with scattered thunderstorms expected throughout the day with damaging wind gusts and hail still remaining a threat at this time. However, rain and severe weather chances should slowly lessening by the start of next week with our upper-level low starting to move out.
