Drier weather holds for next few days, hotter: Southern MS/AL/LA Weather Forecast – 5/20/24

Today starts off quietly, thanks to a high-pressure system that’s currently influencing our weather.

As the day progresses, the high pressure will strengthen, bringing us sunny skies, dry conditions, and very warm temperatures in the upper 80s to lower 90s. This calm and clear weather will continue into the evening, with overnight lows dropping to the upper 60s and lower 70s. Due to the clear skies and light winds, patchy fog might return tomorrow morning.

Looking ahead to the rest of the week, the forecast suggests it will be hotter than normal with increasing chances of storms. A high-pressure system extending from Mexico into the Southern Plains will be the dominant weather feature, pushing temperatures into the mid-90s in some areas. While the humidity will not be too high during the workweek, it’s expected to rise by the weekend, potentially leading to significant heat stress.

As we move into mid to late week, a cold front will approach from the Plains and Mississippi Valley, slightly weakening the high pressure and increasing our chances of thunderstorms. On Wednesday night, the northwest and northern parts of the area could see organized storm activity due to increased moisture and mid-level winds. There’s a marginal risk of a few severe storms in the upper ArkLaMiss region, but the high pressure may delay most storm impacts until a day or two later. By Thursday and Friday, the front will linger, promoting additional storm chances mainly in the northern areas. Aside from this, expect the heat and humidity to continue building as described earlier.
