Baseball Forecast- 6/21/24

As we head into the weekend we have plenty of games to talk weather about. Lots of hot weather and with a mix of humidity we are looking at a lot of afternoon and evening potential for scattered thunderstorms that could cause some delays. Let’s dive into the details for our games this weekend!

New York Yankees

Tonight the Yankees start their series against the Atlanta Braves at home at 7:05pm EST. After a tough series loss to the Orioles, the Yankees need a good win series against the Braves. It will be pretty hot out as it’s been in this area for the past week with temperatures in the low 80s to start the game and we won’t see much cool down even after the game. The humidity will increase throughout the game as we see a chance for scattered thunderstorms especially in the middle innings. If lightning strikes near the area, there will either be a game delay or postponement to the next day. Winds are expected to pick up in the middle innings as well with the storm potential. The reason for the potential thunderstorms is because of the hot humid air. This hot humid air rising is good for baseballs because it helps lift them slightly higher and helps them travel further. With the winds pointing towards the infield that extra rise might not help out much tonight. If we don’t see lightning the game will likely go on as scheduled which is what we can hope for!

Ballpark Forecast for Friday at Yankee Stadium

On Saturday we can expect that hot, humid weather to persist for the 7:15pm EST game against the Braves. Temperatures will be in those low 80s and again will not cool down much post game. However, the humidity will be greater for this game and continue to increase throughout the game. This gives us that chance for thunderstorms throughout the game time especially in the early innings when cloud coverage is higher. This may cause a delay in start time but most likely the game will be played. Winds won’t play too much of a role in ball motion but there are some slight winds in the upper levels that might push the ball slightly towards inner left field.

Ballpark Forecast for Saturday at Yankee Stadium

Sunday gives us the last game of the series against the Braves with a hot 1:35pm EST game. Temperatures will be in the low to mid 90s as we reach peak heat in the first half of the game. There will be some clouds but not enough to keep out of the sun for extended periods of time. Anyone attending the game is advised to wear lots of sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and most importantly drinks lots of water. Humidity will be much lower than Saturday only around 50%. This gives us less of a chance for those thunderstorms but there still is that scattered potential throughout the game. Winds will be fairly breezy which will help keep spectators cool with winds up at 150ft blowing around 15-20mph. These winds will send balls towards left field so anyone out there better get their gloves ready!

Brooklyn Cyclones

The Cyclones continue their series against the Jersey Shore Blue Claws starting with tonight’s game at 7pm EST. Temperatures will be in the low 80s with humidity around 60%. It will be fairly windy for the first few innings but will start to calm as we head into the later innings. The wind will be blowing off the shore towards home plate so especially in the early innings hitting far fly balls will be more difficult. It will be a pretty clear night and for spectators the nice breeze will be very refreshing.

Saturday’s game for the Cyclones versus the Blue Claws takes place at 6pm EST. Temperatures will be in the low 80s for the entire game with humidity around 60%. Before the game begins we will see a decent chance for scattered thunderstorms that could delay the game slightly. We do see that chance for thunderstorms decrease throughout the game until the final few innings where that chance of thunderstorms increases again. It will be mostly cloudy throughout the game and if thunderstorms stay close to the area the game may be delayed or postponed a day. Winds will be pretty breezy around 15mph off the coast heading infield.

The 2pm EST game on Sunday will be the last of the Cyclones series against the Blue Claws. Temperatures will be hot as we head into our peak with the high at 90 degrees. It will be mostly cloudy with expected cloud cover at 70% with humidity at about 50%. It will be pretty gusty with winds around 15mph coming off the shore and gusts up to 30mph. This will make getting balls far in the outfield difficult and outfield players will likely step further in since flys won’t travel as far. There is a slight chance for some scattered thunderstorms so be aware if attending of that possibility.

Hudson Valley Renegades

The Renegades remain in North Carolina for their series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers. Friday night’s game at 6:30pm EST will be pretty hot with temperatures in the upper 80s for the first half of the game and only dropping to the mid 80s in the later innings. It will be pretty sunny and clear with humidity around 50%. Winds will be around 10 mph at about 150ft blowing towards the infield which might affect how far out the ball will go. A little on the hotter side but, overall it will be a pretty nice evening for baseball!

Saturday the Renegades will play the Grasshoppers at 6:30pm EST in Greensboro. The weather will be very similar to Friday evening with just a slight change in wind direction to be even more infield. Winds will be around 10 mph at around 150ft. The temperatures will be in the high 80s for the first half and dropping to the mid 80s for the second half with about 50% humidity. Another pretty hot but clear night.

For the final game in Greensboro the Renegades will play the Grasshoppers in a 2pm EST game. Temperatures will be very hot as we see the hottest temperatures of the day during the first few innings. The high will be 93 degrees with a feels like temperature around 100. It will be very sunny with some variable cloud coverage so having extra sun protection and hydrating will be very important. The potential for scattered thunderstorms is moderate as humidity remains around 45%. This could cause a delay in game time but only if the storms are nearby. Winds will be a bit stronger with speeds around 15-20mph at around 150ft. However this wind is still pointing towards home plate which might disrupt the how far the ball moves outfield.
