The winter weather has passed through leaving our neighbors to the north with some ice, sleet and snow across much of the mid-South and even in our home state. It’s no surprise to us, but we really only saw rain all day yesterday. Things are winding down with the cold snap, but we’ll have one more chance for rain before we return back to our seasonal norms.
Today, we’ll see temperatures warm up a little bit as the clouds clear out into the afternoon. Temperatures will reach the mid 40s across the area and winds will blow in from the northwest before calming down into the evening. This is due to the surface high over us before it moves towards the east. Overnight, the clouds will still be cleared out and the low will fall into the upper 20s to around 30, so still at the freezing mark.
While the temperatures are warming up a bit, it also opens the door for one more system to sneak in from Mexico. In the upper levels, the shortwave trough from Mexico will weaken, but have enough strength to move enough moisture towards the coastal South.
What this means is that Sunday night and Monday morning we’re likely to see rain. Just rain, nothing more. The clouds will increase during the afternoon on Sunday and winds will shift to the south indicating the low’s arrival. Temperatures will reach the 50s during the day but will only fall to the 40s overnight which is a good sign that there won’t be any winter weather associated with this.
This whole system doesn’t look too impressive as it’s not really all that dynamic. We’ll get the north end of the system and it looks like some stratiform rain overnight into the morning. We’ll get a good dose of rain despite this with up to three quarters of an inch by the time it moves out. The rain will start around 9pm for those in western Louisiana and closer to midnight for us in Mississippi. Overall, a nice rainy night for those of you (like me) that like to fall asleep with the rain. In the morning, the rain will hang around until noon for us in the Pinebelt and the coast and later in the afternoon for those in the Mobile Bay Area. Temperatures will reach the low 50s during the day and then dip into the upper 20s overnight as the cold front passes.
