We continue to see subtle shifts to the forecast.
Notice how in the animations below the trend is for the center of the low to move south (first image on left) and the drier air is also sneaking farther south (second image on right).
That would mean slightly lower snow totals for folks north of Highway 98. Looking at the ensemble model data, we have a reasonably sharp cutoff on the north side with a ‘percent-chance of getting more than 1″ of snow’ within the ensemble members.
Keep in mind, we will not have a 10:1 ratio for snow. The area will likely have closer to a 6:1 ratio. The snow ratio is how the models decide how much snow will fall. They assume 1″ of rain will make 10″ of snow. But most snowfall events for the Gulf Coast tend to have more like 6:1 and 7:1 ratios.
That means all the snow totals on the maps that show 3″ to 6″ of snow on the 10:1 ratio is more like 1.8″ to 4.2″ of snow.
Still a good amount! But not Wisconsin. So I tried to keep that in mind while putting together the county-by-county forecast.
The categories here, “Some snow”, “Accumulating snow” and “most snot in a long time” are vague on purpose. And, in this case are probably better than actual numbers. But I know some folks like to see things on a map! So, for folks that like a map of the snow, here is a map of the snowfall estimates. I think this map tells the snow story a bit better than just a number.
Some snow is just that… some snow. It may accumulate in spots and you may even get up to 2″ of the stuff but with how much it may be blowing around, it’ll just look like you got some snow.
Accumulating snow is where I think we will see meaningful accumulations that cause some serious problems – both on the roads and with power outages.
The Most Snow in a Long Time category is pretty self-explanatory, too. These are palces that don’t often see snow and will likely see a “lifetime event” of snow. Though it may only be 3″ it is still more than some spots ever really receive.
Plus, given the wind we will have, I don’t know that anyone will be able to tell for certain exactly how much snow they actually received. So that map is probably a better explainer.
COUNTY-BY-COUNTY FORECAST
Here is a look at the county-by-county forecast. This is the first look at how we think things will shake out. Please take any totals and any forecast to heart, but also allow for some minor changes to snow totals as the forecast continues to evolve.
