A Beautiful Weekend Followed by More Storms Monday – Weekend Forecast for South MS 5/11/24

We’ve had a nice return from the humid and stormy weather this weekend. We’ll have a small break until Sunday night when another low pressure system develops out of the Rockies to bring us more rain and thunderstorms into Monday.

For today, expect some of the best weather we’ll have for late Spring. Temperatures are in the low 80s, a northerly breeze, and partly cloudy skies to top it off. Saturday night will be just as pleasant with temperatures falling into the low 60s. If you’re out and about tonight, the winds will settle down and the clouds will be on the increase.

For Mother’s Day, we’ll see the winds begin to shift southward as the low forms out west. While we likely won’t have many isolated rain showers here, we’ll start to feel the humidity increase into the evening. The first part of the storm will move during the early morning hours bringing some scattered showers to the southern portion of Mississippi.

As the wind shifts at the surface to allow Gulf moisture to move in, the upper levels have been brewing a shortwave trough in the Rockies that is moving northeast during the week. At the surface, this front will occlude fairly quickly as it moves over the Great Plains meaning we’ll get a well-setup warm and cold front on Monday into Tuesday. The warm front, as shown with the precipitation type above, will bring in a thick line of storms mainly to areas in central Mississippi and eventually move east into Alabama from the morning to afternoon.

The cold front is going to be the main concern for everyone in South Mississippi and Louisiana. Not one, but two separate MCS’s are possible from Monday into Tuesday. The first system will be our main concern due to the possible severe weather associated with it. While the wind and tornado threat look to be lower, the hail and heavy rain threat are our main concern. Areas of central Mississippi and west central Alabama look to receive most of the rain with up to 4 inches possible in some areas. In south MS/LA, we may see up to 2.5″ with some localized flash flooding possible. Overnight into Tuesday will see one more round of storms as the cold front moves out. While this doesn’t look as severe due to the slight drop in dewpoint, the heavy rain threat is still there.
