A Stormy Start to the Week with a Stronger Cold Front to Follow – Weekly Outlook for LA/MS/AL 11/17/24

We’re warming up yet again with the influx of some gradient winds coming in from the southeast due to the high pressure system moving out of the southeast. Over the next couple of days, we’ll see conditions get more humid and warm as the winds pull in more humidity. Afterwards, a storm system and a cold front will push in bringing in some heavy rain and gusty winds with much cooler weather to follow. Let’s take a look.

So, the gradient winds I mentioned earlier will blow over much of the western and central South. Areas of eastern Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana will see wind gusts up to 45 mph while areas of Mississippi will see wind gusts up to 35 mph during the day on Monday. It won’t be cold, however since the winds are prevailing out of the Southeast bringing much more humid conditions with temperatures topping out in the 80s and dewpoints in the mid 60s.

The rain itself will move into Louisiana by Monday evening and reach parts of Mississippi by 9pm-12am. It’ll reach the Pinebelt by the early morning hours and last into the early afternoon before it moves towards Alabama and moves out by late Tuesday evening. The SPC released the outlook for tomorrow and Tuesday, and so far, we’re only in a Marginal risk (1 out of 5) since the convection looks pretty limited but the gusty winds are still prevalent. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are some flash flood watches and warnings when this system moves through. Areas of the Pinebelt may see up to 4 inches of rain and many others will see over 2 inches over the 24 hour period.

Afterwards, we’ll have a bit of a lull between the rain and the cold front on Tuesday with temperatures in the low 70s during the day and fall into the 50s at night. Wednesday, however, will be a noticeable difference with blustery winds and cooler temperatures. Temperatures will be in the low to mid 60s and winds will gust to about 25-30mph from the northwest during the day, so have things tacked down if you’re going to be outside.

Another thing of note is a potential tropical storm to develop out of the Caribbean again. While this looks to strengthen over the Gulf of Mexico, it looks like it’ll turn into a weaker low pressure zone by the time it moves our way. So far, this looks to be a low pressure system with not much to go along with it.

While we won’t get to the freezing point like some of our neighbors to the north of us, we’ll definitely feel the temperature dip into the low 40s to the upper 30s for the remainder of the week and the weekend. During the day, temperatures will be in the low to mid 60s, so more fall-like overall! The winds will be gusting a bit as the cold front stalls over us and takes a more latitudinal look as it moves south, so be prepared for a few gusty days after the storm.
