As we’re approaching August in the next couple of days, I figured it would be good to see what we’ll expect for the latter (more like middle for us) part of Summer.
Temperatures
Temperatures and heat are not going anywhere to say the least. With highs in the upper 90s and heat indices in the mid-100s to low 110s, this is going to remain for at least the next couple of weeks. Temperatures are above average and due to the strong ridge that is going to remain over most of the southern US for most of the month. A series of longwave troughs will move over the Plains and the Northeast, however, these will be hard to reach the southern US because of the strongly anomalous high pressure.
A possible bit of good news is that near the end of the month, the ridge looks to weaken but still hang around. This doesn’t seem to have too much of an effect on the temperatures as the surface looks to be at a standstill with a strong surface ridge.
Precipitation
In the medium term, Mississippi will see a slight chance of more precipitation in the next week or so. Going by yesterday’s forecast, the cold front I mentioned arriving around the weekend will be the main reason for the above average precipitation. With a few rounds of storms hitting in the afternoon/evening for a few nights as the cold front passes, it will bring in more rain than usual for this time of year. Going by the drought monitor, it will likely keep us near the average for August with some extra rain possible especially closer to the coast.
Overall, August is going to be quite hot and a slight bit rainy starting out. And it looks like it’s not going to change much if at all except for a few days where a cold front may dip far down enough. As I say this, be sure to stay cool, drink plenty of water and electrolytes, and keep others around you cooled off when you can.
