Better shot for rain this week, with eyes on PTC 9 in the Caribbean: Southern MS/AL/LA Weather Forecast – 9/23/24

While we continue to monitor Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine (eventually to be named Helene), thigns around here are going to be pretty nice – at least for a few days.

The latest on PTC Nine from the National Hurricane Center shows it snaking northward in the coming days and making landfall somewhere along the Florida coastline late Thursday night or early Friday morning.

BIG CAVEAT: This system has not fully formed a center yet. Visible Satellite today supports a low-level center near the X on the map above, but until there is a definitive answer, we can’t say – for certain – where the center will eventually take over. Once we get a center, then the model guidance will become much more accurate and the forecast will become a bit more straightforward.

Back locally, a shift is expected as a frontal boundary approaches, along with a potential tropical system moving into the Gulf. This could lead to wetter conditions, with below-average temperatures (highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s, lows in the 60s). A better shot for rain for the area, too.

Often, when we are on the west side of thee systems, we talk about things drying out. But I think this time, due to a cut-off low descending into the region, we may have a slightly better shot for rain hanging around for a few days.

That said, if we can sneak in under the trough and wrap in some drier air, we could sneak out some drier days as opposed to wet ones.
