Few showers this afternoon, foggy AM tomorrow, plus tropical riff-raff: Southern MS/AL/LA weather Forecast – 9/17/24

Today’s forecast remains largely on track, with scattered showers and thunderstorms expected this afternoon and early evening, particularly for areas along and south of I-20. Thanks to tropical moisture and cloud cover, temperatures will stay cooler than they could be — with highs reaching the upper 80s.

By tonight, rain chances will taper off, leading to quiet conditions overnight as temperatures drop into the mid-60s. However, saturated soil and calm overnight conditions could result in widespread fog development into early Wednesday morning. Fog trends will be monitored for potential Dense Fog Advisories from the NWS. The NQLBOT-assisted data above shows visibility down around 1/10 of a mile.

Dense stuff.

This fog could mean slow-going tomorrow morning if you have to get out the door early. So, if you’re someone who gets “up and at ’em” before 6am, you may want to plan on some extra time tomorrow morning.

From Wednesday through Monday, expect mostly dry weather with the exception of a few afternoon showers on Wednesday in the southern parts of the region. Temperatures will run above normal for the rest of the week, with morning lows in the 60s and highs in the upper 80s. By Thursday, a ridge of high pressure will dominate the area, keeping things mostly dry and a touch warmer through the weekend.

But! During that time we will be monitoring what is happening down in the Tropics.

So far, the NHC isn’t highlighting anywhere specifically, but it does look like the Central American Gyre may start to swirl up some extra moisture as a trough axis (black dashed line in image below) digs pretty far south into the tropics.

With the added NE-to-SW flow into the CAG, we may see something try to bubble up towrd the beginning of next week. Which, if something tries to develop, would put it somewhere near the US by the middle to end of next week.

Where is it going?

No one knows. And anyone giving you a forecast for a specific landfall point is full of bologna.

Now! That said. People out there trying to give you a range – sure! But an accurate range of possibilities isn’t likely going to be helpful at this distance in time. It would be a range from, say, New Orleans to Miami. Which is about half of the Gulf. And even that could change!

The most important thing to know is that you will see a potpourri of different scary-looking weather maps in the coming few days depicting some Big ‘Canes in the Gulf. Try to pay them as little attention as possible. People are out there looking to scare you into clicks, likes and shares.
