Good morning folks, Dangerous heat has been showing its face recently and temperatures are expected to reach as high as 102F today with Heat Index values potentially reaching 110F! These temperatures and the high humidity can pose a serious threat to your health; please drink more water than you think you need!
The National Weather Service recommends taking frequent breaks in either the shade or air conditioning, checking in on the elderly and your neighbors, and keeping your pets indoors or in the shade with enough water.
Winds will be less calm today as a weak surface low creates 5mph to 10mph westerly winds and enhances the thunderstorm potential this evening. Expect general pop-up thunderstorms to develop to the north late in the afternoon and to move southward across the region clearing up before midnight.
Up at the 500mb level (approximately 3.5 miles above the ground), the high pressure responsible for the above average temperatures is still situated over the south; however, as denoted by the yellow line extending west, a new ridge axis is developing as the Northern Plains low pressure system moves eastward. This will allow for the high pressure/ridge to move westward temporarily and will help temperatures to be *slightly* cooler beginning Sunday and lasting throughout most of next week.
Despite a change in temperature the next several days, the moisture will be sticking around, especially near the coast. Above is a GIF displaying how the surface dew point (a direct indication of how much moisture is in the air, darker colors showing more moisture and lighter colors less moisture) is expected to remain with 65F and 75F, which is indicative of high heat indices and precipitation coverage.
The strong surface heating and high dew points will help create instability for our afternoon/evening thunderstorms and showers today. These storms may contain quick downpours and gusty winds – some temporary relief from the heat! But they will quickly move through the area and the humidity will remain. Expect similar weather for the rest of the weekend and into next week: heat and humidity followed by late day thunderstorms.
