We;’ve got about five more days of late-summer before we get back into mid-autumn. The humid airmass and ridge of high pressure that is in place will get pushed out of the area by a potent cold front on Friday and into Saturday.
That cold front will actually have a bit of tropical energy from the remnants of Tropical Storm Pamela in the Pacific. That means this will mark the second time in one season that a tropical system in the Pacific has helped usher in cooler and drier air to parts of the Southeast. And, I’ll be honest, I can’t remember a time that this has happened twice in one season before. Once, sure, that happens every few years. But twice? Pretty neat. And rather rare.
As we switch from warmer and humid to drier adn cooler, there will be some showers and storms on Thursday, Friday and into Saturday. At this point, severe weather isn’t anticipated but a few stronger storms can’t be ruled out.
This seasonal weather does look to stick around for a few days, too. Model guidance says once the cooler air gets here (around the 16th) it holds on to “average” or “below average” temperatures through the 22nd.
Tropical Note
Some of you guys may remember reading last week that I mentioned that the tropics would need to be monitored a bit closer once we move this ridge to the ride. Well, there are three areas to watch in the tropics, but only one that may ever try to make it toward the Gulf.
And even that is not “likely” at this point.
The area farthest to the east, toward the Leeward Islands, would be the one to watch if – and that’s a big if – it can traverse the Caribbean without getting eaten by shear.
