Muggy Weather and Early Week Rain – Weekend Outlook for South MS 12/7/24

As we just came from a cold front day, expect the weather to still be fairly cool today. The clouds will trap a little bit of the warmth, but it’ll still be a cooler mild outside today. If you’re out shopping or prepping for a Christmas party, be sure to at least bring a jacket with you today. Tonight, we’ll see the clouds increase holding on to some of that heat and keeping temperatures from falling into the freezing point. Much of us will see temperatures in the upper 30s to low 40s.

Surface analysis forecast for Sunday from the Weather Prediction Center

By tomorrow, the surface high pressure zone will move to the east which in turn will bring in South southwesterly winds with warmer and more humid conditions.

Combo this with a shortwave trough (above) moving from the Baja Mexico area to the central Plains and we have a storm system on our hands! Well, kind of. There is plenty of moisture flow on the back side of the high pressure system with a warm front developing near the Houston area. This will move north on Sunday providing enough moisture in the mid-levels to rain out much of Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi. Central and South Louisiana will experience most of the rain before the system moves towards eastern Louisiana and south central Mississippi by the evening hours. We’ll see some intermittent rain start in the mid-morning to early afternoon, but the main event for us in the Pinebelt and the coast will be later in the evening between 7pm to midnight. The cold front will move in after midnight guiding the system towards the east and eventually south towards the coast. This is when the heavier rain will hit and will remain until the evening on Monday. Rainfall totals on average are around 1-1.5″ but any areas with thunderstorms will see more. The thunderstorm chance is fairly low, but flash flooding will be a concern overnight into Monday.

For temperatures, Sunday will be warmer reaching the mid-60s and won’t cool down much overnight. We’ll fall to around 60 Monday morning before shooting up to the low 70s with the southwesterly wind influence. Monday night will also be a warmer one falling to around 60 with the rain still going.
