NOAA predicts another active hurricane season

The Climate Prediction Center released their seasonal prediction today, and to noone’s suprise it included an above-average forecast.

The official prediction is: Above-normal Atlantic hurricane season. The CPC calls for 13 to 20 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 6 to 10 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 3 to 5 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher) is expected.

Forecasters predict a 60-percent chance of an above-normal season, a 30-percent chance of a near-normal season, and a 10-percent chance of a below-normal season.

The First named storm of the season may develop during the next five days given what the National Hurricane Center is monitoring as of this morning. If it does get a name, it will be Ana.

  1. Hoping this won’t be a year where, if a thunderstorm develops over the Atlantic, it gets a name. Not sure what the ‘end-game’ is here with the NHC.
