On Tonight’s Severe Weather – Forecast for South MS 1/5/24

Several severe thunderstorm warnings and tornado warnings have passed over the ArkLaMiss Delta. As the afternoon progresses, I suspect there will be more as it moves across central Mississippi. The line itself will begin to weaken as it moves further east, however it will still pull some more discrete cells ahead of the main line.

As the line moves east, there is a chance for some discrete cells to form ahead of the line. These look to form around 5-7pm and several will move in from the coast. Most of the severe/tornadic cells look to be around central and east central Mississippi with some isolated ones further south towards the Pinebelt. The main system looks to be the main threat for wind and heavy rain. The winds look to be around 40-50mph in strength and heavy rain up to an inch possible.

The main part of the front looks to hit around 8pm to 2am. High winds, heavy rain, and a possible tornado are all possible. As the line moves east, it will start to dissipate a bit in strength, but areas of Alabama may still see some isolated severe cells before midnight.

Overall, this system looks to slow down a bit before it reaches central and eastern Mississippi, however the severe weather threat is still there. Many areas will still be under a threat for high winds and isolated tornadoes as the night progresses. Please be cautious and have a plan in case the weather turns severe in your area.
