Pop up storms, some severe weather, and our first taste of real heat: Southern MS/AL/LA Weather Forecast – 6/12/23

We had a weak cold front making its way along Highway 82, coming from the northeast. That cold front will keep moving and eventually stop near Interstate 20 this morning. the front itself won’t offer much of a catalyst for storms, but south of the front later today – across much of the area – it will allow storms to develop.

During the day, the warm and humid air south of the stalled front could lead to some strong and even severe storms. Watch out for gusty winds and small hail. The storms will move southeast, so the areas at risk are generally south of Interstate 20. The Storm Prediction Center has the area highlighted with a Slight Risk for severe weather.

The hi-res HRRR model shows storms slower to develop this afternoon and not really getting moving until around dinner time. I tend to think this may be a bit slow, and I expect to see – at least a few – storms starting to fire up closer to 3p or 4p.

The Southern Miss baseball game starts at 5p tonight and that may be a bit interesting given the timing for storms.

storms will die down later in the evening, and we might even get a break for a few hours, but after midnight, more storms will move in from the northwest. They shouldn’t be severe, but there might be some gusty winds and heavy rain for a little while.

Looking ahead to Tuesday through next Monday, we’ve got a ridge of high pressure extending from the Southern Plains to the Gulf of Mexico. That means warm air from the Gulf will settle over our area, causing temperatures to rise and triggering daily afternoon thunderstorms. Some of those storms could turn severe because of the slow-moving front.

For the area, though, when we aren’t dodging pop-up storms we’re gonna have some scorching temperatures later in the week, with highs in the mid to upper 90s. Heat indices could reach 106 to 110 degrees in some places.

To stay safe in the heat, make sure to stay hydrated and take breaks if you’re working outside. We’ll have rain chances throughout the weekend, but they’ll taper off by next Monday, giving us a little break from all the rain. That’s the scoop for now, but we’ll keep you updated if anything changes with this weather system.
