Pop-up Thunderstorms During the Week, then More Rain Possible During the Weekend – Weekly Outlook for South MS 6/9/24

We’ll have a cold front move in from the north overnight bringing storms to north and central Mississippi into the early morning. The storms will dissipate as they move past central Missississippi, however the cold front will move a bit slower behind and stay through the day on Monday.

For the Pinebelt, we’ll get some pop-up thunderstorms during the afternoon and some possible after dark. Temperatures will reach the mid 90s during the day with heat indices reaching the upper 90s to 100. Winds will be feeding from the south which will enhance moisture flow until the cold front passes.

Over the next couple of days afterward, a surface ridge from the Great Lakes will build and ridge over much of the Ohio River Valley down to the Gulf. Overhead is a similar story with a lack of geostrophic winds in the Southeast as the trough moves away.

Rain chances will diminish for a few days as the ridge builds over us. However, we’ll see a change as a low pressure system in Gulf of Mexico develops. The National Hurricane Center hasn’t said anything about this so far, but our main concern will be plenty of rain. Some isolated thunderstorms will be possible from the late week into the early weekend. The low will move up the Gulf and bring the rain with it during the weekend, so be wary if it dampens your plans or brings some heavy rain to the roadways.
