Slight Risk for severe weather today, dry by tomorrow afternoon: Southern MS/AL/LA Weather Forecast

Showers and storms are back in the forecast today. Plus we will have a round of storms try to swing through overnight, too. The Storm Prediction Center has parts of the area under a Slight Risk, but we aren’t worried about significant severe weather nor any kind of an outbreak. The main threat today will be brief heavy rain, wind gusts up to 60mph and the potential for a brief, weak tornado.

There will be two rounds of storms toda. The afternoon riff-raff and then a weak line of storms overnight tonight.

This animation probably over-estimates the rain near Mobile and under-estimates rainfall elsewhere, but I think it does a good job at painting a general picture: isolated storms today, a more meaningful change for rain overnight.

The forecasting matrix below probably helps line things up a bit better.

That said, I don’t think many spots will see a meaningful amount of rainfall. Some areas will see more than 1″ but I would bet that a lot of the model guidance is over-estimating totals across the area by a good bit. Even the Euro model is showing some spots with up to 3″ of rain and I just don’t think we get that lucky.

Once this rain rolls through, we dry out for the weekend and the next shot for rain looks to arrive as we head into next Week.
