Slightly drier weather as ridging develops over the majority of the U.S.: Southeast Weather Forecast – 7/3/22

The past few days have been active in terms of rainfall and cloud coverage from Gulf moisture, tropical disturbances, and recently designated tropical storm Colin. The next few days are expected to be quieter as subtropical ridging consolidates over the CONUS, bringing sinking air and clearer skies; regardless, dew points will remain in the lower-to-mid 70s and temperatures will increase across Southeast.

Subtropical ridging is strengthening over the central U.S. with the ridge axis (drawn in yellow on the above image) developing over the Plains. This will keep a bubble of moisture situated over the Southeast for at least the next few days allowing for general thunderstorm development in the afternoon/evenings; however, precipitation amounts and coverage will be less than previously experienced the past few days as an area of high pressure sits over the region.

Colin was designated a tropical storm early Saturday morning after tropical storm-force winds were recorded near Charleston, SC causing some downed trees. Future intensification is not likely and impacts will only include gusty winds and heavy rainfall along the coast of North Carolina as it treks northeastward and away from land Sunday afternoon.

Overall, the Southeast will remain drier the next 3 days, with most convective activity occurring in the afternoon/evenings. The 4th will contain the chance for showers and thunderstorms, but any rainfall will likely pass quickly, allowing for most people to stay dry during fireworks. Stay safe if you’re launching fireworks and enjoy your 4th of July!
