Slightly Stormy Memorial Day With the Front to Hang Around – Weekly Outlook for MS/AL/LA 5/26/24

We’re going to feel the summer heat for the next few days as the cold front will move slowly over the Deep South. Strong southerly winds will keep the heat on with the heat index reaching up to 100 today and up to 105-110 Monday and Tuesday. I’d definitely recommend keeping some water with you at all times, staying indoors or finding a water oasis to cool off in tomorrow.

Speaking of tomorrow, we’ve been upgraded to a slight risk of severe thunderstorms for the morning (2 out of 5) but also for later in the day. The worst of it looks to be in the morning with some isolated severe storms possible as the MCS moves further south, however it looks to dissipate as it moves further down from I-20.

In the afternoon, we’ll have a chance of some isolated severe storms from an MCS moving southeast around the Pinebelt. This should arrive around the mid-afternoon and move towards the coast and Alabama during the evening. I wouldn’t cancel your outdoor plans but keep an eye to the sky if you see some menacing clouds above.

Tuesday will also be quite hot as the cold front moves through during the day, albeit slowly. The heat index will begin to fall and reach the mid 90s as the winds start to shift to the north during the day. Tuesday and Wednesday will both have a small chance of pop-up thunderstorms during the day with highs in the 90s and lows in the mid 60s.

By Thursday, we’ll have a decent ridge build over the Deep South providing us some drier weather. This will keep the heat index down for a couple of days until we have another system move in. Come Friday, a low pressure system will form over northern Mexico moving northeast. This will begin to stall as it reaches us on Saturday. The ridge over us will hold, but its position will allow a few MCS’s to reach areas of Louisiana and Mississippi from Saturday into Sunday.

Have a good week!
