Technically in a drought, rain is on the horizon: Southern MS/AL/LA Weather Forecast – 1/28/22

The dry weather continues. Today a weak front will pass through and kick up the wind a bit. This may lead to wildfire concerns in some spots. If you are planning any outdoor burning, just make sure to keep a close eye on things.

Or wait until this weekend, if possible, when the wind calms down a hair.

Speaking of things being dry, I bet no one saw this one coming: We’re in a drought!

This is probably better qualified as a “flash drought” than any kind of long term drought (considering we just finished one of the wettest calendar years on record for the region), so it will have very little impact on most folks. But if you’re a farmer, I bet you’ve noticed.

This dry stretch is going to come to an end as we move through next week as we have a parade of systems set to move through the region. These will offer a quick shot for showers and storms Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

There is still the outside chance we see severe weather Wednesday/Thursday. But I’m not overly concerned at this time.

For those wondering about the post being shared talking about snow. I’m not overly concerned about that, either. Angel Leggett Young shared this picture with me yesterday.

Here is what that same model guidance is showing this morning:

As expected, its gone.

And as a reminder this is not a case of, “Mississippi weather can change, just like that!”

This is a case of, “the weather model is doing exactly what it is supposed to do, offer a new set of outcomes based on a new set of initial conditions.”

Like I always say, don’t let people posting weather model maps, covering an event more than three days in the future, with, “Look at the chance for snow!” get your hopes up. Model guidance isn’t that good.

I would be more worried about tornadoes on Wednesday/Thursday than I would be about snow this weekend. And, again, I’m not overly concerned about tornadoes at this time. So you can imagine how I feel about the snow!
