Weekend heat advisories possible with steady warmup: Coastal MS/LA/AL – 7/6/22

As you woke up this morning, you probably noticed that it is going to be a warm day. With air temperatures starting in the mid-to-upper-70s, you can expect the day to peak around 90F. Adding in dew point temperatures in the upper-70s, heat indices will peak just above 100F.

Some communities may see mild relief via afternoon showers, but these rain chances will stay at or below 50-percent this week. This pattern will continue throughout the rest of the week, heading into the weekend.

This warm, repetitive pattern is a result of a stable high pressure system that is strengthening in the southern US and is forecasted to slowly move to the south-central US by the weekend. This high pressure system will keep temperatures anomalously warmer than average as it draws in heat from the west. As the pattern persists, the heat indices will start to rise and hover around 105F.

Slowly, heat indices are expected to climb the ladder this weekend as west-southwest surface winds deliver warm, moist air off of the Gulf of Mexico. 105F heat indices could be reached, triggering potential heat advisories along the Northern Gulf Coast. During this warmer-than-average period, try to get yard work done in the morning or late evening to avoid the sweltering temperatures. Note, though, that most afternoons and evenings could see a short-lasting pop-up thunderstorm, so remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

The above average temperatures and moisture will persist for the next week and half for the Northern Gulf Coast. Coastal communities will continue to expect westward winds induced by the central high pressure system; these winds will deliver moisture along with the heat. This combination will spawn persistent, localized thunderstorms most evenings.

The weather for the next several days will be like Groundhog Day, so try to wait out the pattern by staying cool in a pool or on the beach!
